TAM VALLEY RESIDENCE

TAM VALLEY, CA

THIS DESIGN SOLUTION FOCUSED ON AN ADDITION TO AN EXISTING TWO STORY RESIDENCE THAT HAD ADJACENT UNCOVERED PARKING AND AN EXTERIOR STAIRCASE FOR ACCESS.  THE RESIDENCE, SITUATED WITH A VIEW OF MY TAMALPIAS, WAS COMPOSED OF TWO SMALL ROOMS, MINIMAL NATURAL LIGHT AND NO USEABLE EXTERIOR SPACE.

THE SPECIFIC PROGRAM WAS TO PROVIDE COVERED PARKING AND REDESIGN THE EXISTING LIVING AND DINING ROOMSWHILE LEAVING THE EXISTING STRUCTURE AND ROOF LINE INTACT.

SINCE THE GARAGE WAS TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE IN THE PARKING AREA, THE IDEA WAS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE A NEW LIVING SPACE ABOVE THE GARAGE WHICH CONNECTED TO THE EXISTING STRUCTURE BY A NEW INTERIOR STAIRWAY BY THE ENTRY. THIS STARWAY WAS CONFIGURED TO PROVIDE A TRANSITION FROM THE NEW LIVING AREA TO THE EXPANDED DINING AREA. A NEW PATTERN OF DESCENDING WINDOWS WAS INSTALLED ALONG THE EXISTING REAR STAIRS TO INCREASE LIGHT INTO THIS AREA.

AT THE UPPER LEVEL, TWO NEW OUTDOOR TERRACES OF VARYING SHAPES WERE DESIGNED TO ALLOW LIGHT TO PASS THROUGH INTO THE BEDROOMS BELOW. AT THE ENTRY, A CURVED LANDSCAPED WALL WAS CREATED TO INSURE PRIVACY BETWEEN THE RECREATION ROOM AND THE DRIVEWAY.
