WHAT MADE THIS PARTICULARLY CHALLENGING WAS THERE NEVER WAS AN OVERALL PROGRAM TO BEGIN THE PROJECT. EACH PHASE WAS STARTED WITHOUT KNOWING THERE WAS GOING TO BE SUBSEQUENT PHASES. THE SWIMMING POOL WAS STARTED AND THEN A CABANA WAS APPROVED AND INCORPORATED. DURING THIS CONSTRUCTION PHASE, THE PROGRAM WAS CHANGED TO ADD A FOUR BEDROOM ADDITION TO THE EXISTING RESIDENCE
THE DESIGN OF THE ADDITION WAS CONCEIVED AS AN ARM OF THE LIVING SPACE REACHING ACROSS THE CONTOURS OF THE SITE TO OVERLOOK THE POOL AND CABANA AREAS. THERE WAS ONE LOGICAL PLACE TO BREAK THROUGH FROM THE EXISTING RESIDENCE AND THAT WAS USED AS A DEPARTURE POINT FOR THE ADDITION.
THE UPPER SITTING AREA OFF THE MASTER BEDROOM OVERLOOKS THE LIVING SPACE BELOW AND TO THE SIDE OF THE NEW ADDITION, LETTING LIGHT IN FROM ALL DIRECTIONS. THE BEDROOM ADDITION WAS DESIGNED AS AN ARM OF LIVING SPACE REACHING ACROSS THE CONTOURS OF THE SITE TO OVERLOOK THE POOL AND CABANA AREAS.
AS CONSTRUCTION OF THE ADDITION WAS UNDERWAY WITH FOUNDATIONS POURED, TWO OF THE FOUR PLANNED BEDROOMS WERE ELIMINATED IN THE NEW ADDITION. WHERE THESE 2 BEDROOMS WERE PLANNED AND THEN REMOVED, IT CREATED THE FAMILY TRIANGLE ROOM AT THE END OF THE ADDITION AND OPENED UP THE WALL TO THE TERRACE OVERLOOKING THE POOL AREA.
THE BEDROOM WING WALKWAY WAS DESIGNED AS A GLASS ENCLOSED GALLERY CONNECTING THE EXISTING TO THE NEW. THE ROOF WAS BROKEN INTO 2 LEVELS TO PROVIDE A PLAY OF LIGHT AND SHADOW THROUGHOUT THE DAY
THE KITCHEN REMODEL INCLUDED A LARGE WINDOW WALL TO LOOK BACK ONTO THE LANDSCAPED HILLSIDE AND BRING MORNING AND AFTERNOON DAYLIGHT INTO THE INTERIORS OF THE HOUSE.
THE OUT OF SCALE ROOF PROJECTION OVER THE EXISTING UPSTAIRS BATHROOM WAS REMOVED TO BRING THE EXISTING ROOM IN A CALMER SCALE WITH THE NEW ADDITION. THE EXISTING SHELL WAS KEPT BUT THE CRAMPED AND DARK SPACES WITHIN WERE CHANGED
A NEW STAIR TOWER WAS INCORPORATED INTO THE ENTRY TO REPLACE THE NARROW EXISTING STAIRS TO THE UPPER LEVEL
