SINCE A GARAGE WAS TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE IN THE PARKING AREA, THIS IDEA WAS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE A NEW LIVING AREA ABOVE THE GARAGE, WHICH IS CONNECTED TO THE EXISTING STRUCTURE BY A NEW INTERIOR STAIRWAY AND ENTRY. THIS STAIRWAY WAS CONFIGURED TO PROVIDE A TRANSITION FROM THE NEW LIVING AREA TO AN EXPANDED DINING AREA. A NEW PATTERN OF DESCENDING WINDOWS WAS INSTALLED ALONG THE EXISTING REAR STAIR TO INCREASE LIGHT INTO THIS AREA.
THE NEW LIVING AREA AND GARAGE ARE ORIENTED ON AN AXIS TOWARD MT. TAMALPAIS IN ORDER TO FRAME THE VIEW ACROSS THE VALLEY, ALONG THIS AXIS, A CURVED ROOF MONITOR IS ELEVATED ABOVE THE ROOF TO PROVIDE SECONDARY LIGHT THROUGH CLERESTORY WINDOWS. THE NEW VOLUMINOUS LIVING AREA PROVIDED A SPACIAL CHANGE FROM THE EXISTING LOW CEILINGS.
